Tomography for enhanced target detection for foliage penetrating airborne SAR ( First - Year Results )

چکیده
The SARTOM project addresses a key area of defence interest, namely the detection and identification of targets hidden in foliage. The project includes a program of experimental data gathering, combined with the use of advanced processing techniques designed to extract the maximum amount of information contained in the data: namely SAR Tomography and the analysis of multi-polarimetric and multi-frequency systems, including the area of Polarimetric Interferometric SAR (PolinSAR). The remote sensing system used in the project is the DLR airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system known as E-SAR, which covers X-, C-, Land P-band. In this paper we present the results obtained to-date from the flight trials that were conducted in September 2007 at the test site Dornstetten, west of Munich, Germany. The analysis does not yet include the use of tomography but instead investigates the visibility of targets hidden under a range of different foliage covers compared to targets placed in the open.

The Use of Multiple-Polarization Data in Foliage Penetrating (FOPEN) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Applications
Foliage penetrating (FOPEN) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are capable of producing images of targets concealed under a foliage canopy. The quality and interpretability of these images, however, is generally limited by dense foliage clutter and by fundamental foliage-induced image degradation. Use of a polarimetric SAR to provide multiple polarization channels can mitigate these effects...
متن کاملAdaptive target detection in foliage-penetrating SAR images using alpha-stable models
Detecting targets occluded by foliage in foliage-penetrating (FOPEN) ultra-wideband synthetic aperture radar (UWB SAR) images is an important and challenging problem. Given the different nature of target returns in foliage and nonfoliage regions and very low signal-to-clutter ratio in UWB imagery, conventional detection algorithms fail to yield robust target detection results. A new target dete...
متن کاملMoving target detection in foliage using along track monopulse synthetic aperture radar imaging
This paper presents a method for detecting moving targets embedded in foliage from the monostatic and bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data obtained via two airborne radars. The two radars, which are mounted on the same aircraft, have different coordinates in the along track (cross-range) domain. However, unlike the interferometric SAR systems used for topographic mapping, the two radars...
متن کاملVHF-Band SAR for Detection of Concealed Ground Targets
Airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating in the VHF band and used in conjunction with change detection has shown promising results for wide-area surveillance of ground targets. By using VHF-band frequencies, both targets in the open as well as concealed by foliage may be detected in a robust manner. VHF-band SAR is able to detect hidden targets because both foliage attenuation and clut...
متن کاملPhysics-Based Detection of Targets in SAR Imagery using Support Vector Machines
Radar scattering from an illuminated object is often highly dependent on the target-sensor orientation. In conjunction with physics based feature extraction, the exploitation of aspect-dependent information has led to successful improvements in the detection of tactical targets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. While prior work has attempted to design detectors by matching them to imag...
